The reef hobby has spent decades building something remarkable: a global, distributed network of people who genuinely care about corals. We think that deserves a foundation of trust.
The problem
You introduced a strain to the hobby, or you have been preserving an OG colony for years. Your reputation is your name. Right now, there is nothing stopping someone else from using it. Genetics does not lie. Your word alone has to.
Two corals, same name, different price, different photos. It will take prime tank real estate and possibly years to grow out. You want to be sure. At the moment, you cannot be. That is what we are here to fix.
How it works
We send you a collection kit: a small tube and a return-addressed envelope. Clip a few polyps and drop them in. That is the whole sample.
We extract and sequence the DNA, generating a unique genetic fingerprint for that coral. The science is the same used in conservation research.
A short, unique code tied to that coral's fingerprint. Print it on frag tags, include it in listings, pass it along whenever the coral changes hands.
Enter the code at reefgenomics.com and see the strain name, species, genetic markers, and photos of the mature colony. The record travels with the coral.
Every sample goes into the database. As it grows, we match new submissions against known strains and species. If your coral is something we have seen before, we will tell you. If it is not, that is interesting too.
As the original submitter, you can add photos of the mature colony, so future owners know exactly what they are growing toward.
